Francis Xavier Matt emigrated from Germany to Utica, New York, in 1880 and established his own brewery there in 1888.  The brewery is now the fourth oldest family brewery in the United States. It always has been headed by someone named F.X. Matt.  The brewery survived National Prohibition by producing soft drinks under the name Utica Club.  Utica Club was also the name of its first beer produced after the repeal of prohibition.  The brewery continues to produce soft drinks.  Today it most popular beers belong to the Saranac family.  No longer a big seller, the old Utica Club brand is affectionately known as Uncle Charlie,
