Ohio at epicenter of heroin epidemic killing thousands

The Appalachian river town Portsmouth was hit early and hard.

In 2014 Ohio had more overdose death than any other state with the exception of the much more populous California.  Black tar heroin reached Ohio as early as 1998.

“Traffickers from Xalisco, Mexico, on the Pacific coast, chose central Ohio in an effort to avoid the gangs and guns associated with the drug trade in cities such as New York.”
