Name changes for the national British women’s temperance organization

The White Ribbon archivist Anna Homer kindly provided me this information that I post here as the recent changes are not widely known.

The National British Women’s Total Abstinence Union (inc.) passed a resolution to change its name to White Ribbon Association (inc.) on 8th April 1992. The official certificate of incorporation (from Companies House) is dated 5th May 1993.

The Women’s Total Abstinence Educational Union Ltd was incorporated on 27th August 1951. The charity still officially operates under both names, but generally uses White Ribbon Association day to day.

A complete timeline of name changes is below:

1876 formed as British Women’s Temperance Association

1893 divided into two organisations: National British Women’s Temperance Association and Women’s Total Abstinence Union

1926 the two organisations reformed as National British Women’s Total Abstinence Union

1951 the NBWTAU incorporates the Women’s Total Abstinence Educational Union Ltd – these are two separate legal entities run in tandem

1993 NBWTAU name is changed to White Ribbon Association
