The story begins with reporter Dan Charles carrying a four-ounce bag of 90% pure caffeine obtained at a Houston coffee processor.  It is enough for a thousand Starbucks tall lattes or two thousand cans of Coke or Pepsi or to kill several people.

Those who want less caffeine remove it and those who want more (like soft drink manufacturers) add it.

Most decaffeinated coffee comes from Germany where decaffeinated coffee has its origins.

China now produces huge amounts of synthetic caffeine.  The beverage industry mostly uses synthetic caffeine and not caffeine extracted from coffee beans.
